PIV measurements of velocity fields in glottis on a physical vocal fold model
نویسندگان
چکیده
The velocity fields along a selfvibrating physical model of vocal folds were studied experimentally. The shape of the vocal folds was specified according to data measured on excised human larynges in phonation position. The model was fabricated in 1:4 scale as a silicone body vibrating in the wall of a plexiglass wind tunnel. The model is not excited externally and oscillates only due to coupling with the flow. In addition to acoustic, subglottal pressure and impact intensity measurements, flow velocity fields were recorded in the coronal plane using particle image velocimetry, in the domain immediately above glottis. Analysis of the PIV images taken within 25 phases of one vibration cycle gives good insight into the dynamics of the supraglottal flow.

Visualization and High-speed Piv Measurements of the Flow Downstream a Dynamic Mechanical Model of the Human Vocal Folds
The intention of the present study is the detailed analysis of the unsteady vortex dynamics downstream the human glottis during phonation at typical fundamental frequencies of about 120 Hz (for men). A hydraulic respiratory mock circuit has been built-up including a three-times up-scaled realistic dynamic model of the vocal folds. Time-resolving flow measurements were carried out downstream the...
متن کاملViscous flow features in scaled-up physical models of normal and pathological vocal phonation
Unilateral vocal fold paralysis results when the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which innervates the muscles of the vocal folds becomes damaged. The loss of muscle and tension control to the damaged vocal fold renders it ineffectual. The mucosal wave disappears during phonation, and the vocal fold becomes largely immobile. The influence of unilateral vocal fold paralysis on the viscous flow develop...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS During phonation, skewing of the glottal flow waveform (Q) refers to a phenomenon that occurs when the flow decelerates more rapidly than it accelerates. This skewing is clinically important because it increases the glottal efficiency, which is defined by the acoustic intensity (sound pressure level) divided by the subglottal pressure. Current theoretical models predict th...

In this study, a white light particle image velocimetry (WL PIV) system which employs a light sheet generated with a flash was used. The system was developed in order to provide a cost-efficient and safe alternative to laser systems while keeping the accuracy limits required for hydraulic model tests. To investigate the accuracy of WL PIV method under different flow conditions, experiments were...
متن کاملComparisons of Experimental and Simulated Velocity Fields in Membrane Module Spacers
Spacers are used in spiral wound and plate and frame membrane modules to create flow channels between adjacent membrane layers and mix fluid within the flow channel. Flow through the spacer has a significant beneficial impact on mixing and resulting mass transfer rates but is accompanied by an undesirable increase in pressure drop. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a common tool used to eva...
